  • Annual Open Houses for Sept 2019 Admission

Our two Open Houses for prospective applicants are October 16 and October 18 from 5pm to 7pm. The October 16th session is geared more towards out of District 21 applicants and the October 18th session is geared more towards students middle school zoned for District 21 but attend either rather than neither. Remember that parking in the neighborhood is in short supply so arrive early and if history is any indicator, the crowds will be substantial so you might want to target specific Talent programs in order of priority just in case you can't make it to all of them. You will have an opportunity to wander the building, listen to presentations by the teachers of the various talent areas that we test in, and some questions may be answered. Many of the presenters will make their email addresses available on a case by case basis and you will be given the contact information for the school's admissions department for follow-up. There is no sign up requirement. Simply show up and we'll accommodate you in that time slot.

    High School Applications Go Digital

Beginning this fall, the Department of Education is offering an online application system, “MySchools”, for high school admissions. This means that families of 8th graders will be able to submit their high school applications online. Parents will also be able to register their children online for the SHSAT and LaGuardia auditions. We will no longer send you a paper HS application and a SHSAT/LaGuardia registration form.

In order to get an access to MySchools, parents must create an account with a valid email address. We will be sending home access information (website, PIN) as soon they are available.

    Water Test Results

If you wish to view the letter from the CEO of the Department of Ed's School Operation Divsion on the subject of our building's water test results, please click here Don't be overly concerned because the fixtures in question have been out of service for years for a variety of reasons. And rest assured, the administration will follow up with the DOE's ongoing and future remediation projects and no students or staff will have access to such fixtures until they meet the latest guidelines.

Mark Twain Initiatives for the Upcoming Year

We recommend that familes review the masterycollaborative.org web site to familiarize themselves on one of our planned initiatives for this upcoming school year. "In a mastery-based learning environment, students progress by demonstrating independent mastery of learning goals, or outcomes. Goals are transparent from the start. Feedback focuses on crucial next steps to achieve and deepen mastery of skills and content over time." Our hope is that "Parents are more in the loop on their children's progress... more frequent, transparent feedback on how to understand, discuss, and support learning."

In a related initiatve, the Habits of Success, we recommend that families view this video at https://vimeo.com/201720747. If you want additional information, it's available from the University of Chicago at https://consortium.uchicago.edu/publications/teaching-adolescents-become-learners-role-noncognitive-factors-shaping-school
